Every season Wye Salmon Association (WSA) offer a number of one day courses for both adults and youngsters. The courses are run with the kind support of professional [APGAI] guides and kind permission of beat owners. WSA is also pleased to offer a set of educational modules aimed at introducing and fostering a long term enthusiasm for game angling and river ecology. It provides teachers or group leaders with an educational tool that either meets with some of the Key Stage requirements of the National Curriculum in England and Wales or can be integrated into them as well as providing an interesting extra curricula activity.
Education
Following a successful pilot scheme in 2014 Wye Salmon Association is now offering one day Introductory Fly Fishing courses to School pupils aged 8 to 11 years, The courses are run by WSA under the governance of the Game Angling Instructors Association (GAIA). Each course is led by a a fully qualified GAIA Coach, holding Angling Trust Level 2 Certificate In Coaching and First Aid Certificate. Risk Assessments for both the In School and Waterside parts of the day are provided by both the Lead Coach and WSA. The Lead Coach is supported by GAIA trained Volunteer Assistant Coaches, all WSA members, who also hold DBS Certificates and Level 1 Working Together to Safeguard Children Certificates.
These courses are offered along with a set of modules aimed at introducing and fostering a long term enthusiasm for game angling and river ecology. They are designed to provide teachers of children aged up to 18 years with an educational tool that can either meets with some of the Key Stage requirements of the National Curriculum in England and Wales or can be integrated into them as well as providing an interesting extra curricula activity. The courses can offer a new experience providing excitement and pleas¬ure for the pupils and an excellent opportunity for learning outside the classroom.
Each course includes a classroom Powerpoint presentation, WSA Game Angling Syllabus, and an A5 booklet published by WSA entitled ‘Tomorrows Flyfisher’ a copy of which is given to each student. This booklet is being reprinted and this year we will be adding a section on angling etiquette and respect for not only other anglers but also all other river or water users.
Each course will be run in a relaxed friendly atmosphere where the pupil’s enjoyment will be paramount to the success of the day.

Fly Fishing Courses
Wye Salmon Association (WSA) are offering a series of one day course for adults and youngsters. Courses will be run with the support of professional GAIA & AGAIA instructors and with the kind permission of the beat owners. Open to all grades of caster from beginners upwards, single handed (trout] & double handed (salmon) courses will take place on the River Wye. Tackle will be provided for youngsters. Building on the spey casting courses we will also offer a series of courses designed to improve salmon anglers techniques, knowledge of rivercraft and essential fishing skills. These are not a casting courses and those attending will need to have some basic salmon fishing and casting skills. (Intermediate or advanced levels).
