Citizen Science
WSA Citizen Science volunteers sample the Wye and its watercourses on a regular basis, the graph summarizes their work for February. As you can see, the phosphate levels in the Worm and the Gamber, both significant tributaries of the Wye are well above the target levels set by statutory bodies. These levels lead to excess algal growth that in turn prevents or slows the growth of the water crowfoot that the Wye used to be famous for. It is this evidence that informs the decisions of those bodies into taking action to revive the river.
We’re always looking for more volunteers to collect samples, particularly on the Ithon, the Lynnfi and Felindre Brook All equipment and training will be provided along with a WhatsApp group to post queries and to keep in touch with other volunteers. If you’d like to take part email Chris Enstone, WSA Citizen Science co-ordinator at chrisenstone1951@gmail.com”
Citizen Science
Our Citizens Science initiative continues to prove a valuable tool in beating the drum of improving water quality thanks to the work led by volunteers and WSA member Dr Gordon Green in preparing detailed reports on the data gathered in the significantly polluted areas and associated issues within the river catchment.
As you are probably aware. the state of the Wye and its watershed are headline news, for all the wrong reasons. Part of the solution is the gathering of evidence regarding the quality of the water and WSA have a a team of 30 or so volunteers who regularly sample in the catchment. Together with volunteers from three other groups there is now considerable body of data, over 13000 records, that is used by the statutory bodies, such as the Environment Agency and Natural Resource Wales, in their decisions regarding how to improve the Wye.
WSA is currently looking for more volunteers and particularly those who can sample the Llynfi and Dulas. Sampling is usually done once a week and all equipment and training will be provided. If you can help then please contact me on chrisenstone1951@gmail.com
